Polly Apfelbaum has recently collaborated with Durham Press to create two new series of woodblock monoprints, titled Solar Eclipse and Stripe for Stripe. Both series are printed on handmade Japanese paper with Solar Eclipse available in 25 x 25 inch or 14 ¼ x 14 ¼ inch formats and Stripe for Stripe as 37 x 15 ¼ inches. These unique works revisit the stripe, a motif Apfelbaum first began to explore at Durham Press in 2008 with her Rainbow monoprint series. She has returned to this language with fresh eyes as she continues to compose prints which seem endless in their sometimes bold, sometimes nuanced, variations.

Uniform bands of contrasting and complimentary colors cascade down the page in Apfelbaum’s Rainbow monoprints, while Stripe for Stripe (below) begins to add new variation in its vertical format. She introduces variations of thick and thin stripes stacked into pillared forms, exploring how structure can affect these compositions of color. Some hold a density which seems to compress vivid colors under their own weight, while others extend upwards as the stark white space relieves that pressure.

Solar Eclipse, inspired by the recent full eclipse, transforms these stripes into a circular format. Within their borders, uniform across the series, Apfelbaum alters the color and form of each stripe – thick, thin, contrasting, monochrome. As they interact with each other, they also begin to be influenced by the border that surrounds them. Some are contained within this boundary as they contract or vibrate with energy, while others begin to expand beyond their circumference. Much like the sun and the moon these spheres seem to work in cycles as they pass through moments of light and dark, dense and sparse, throughout the series.
